Police make nine arrests at Liverpool vs Man City for tragedy chanting while one also detained for common assault in crackdown on football-related disorder

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Per , Merseyside police made nine arrests on charges of tragedy chanting at Anfield during last Sunday's Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City. According to authorities, a 38-year-old man from Audenshaw, a 32-year-old man from Macclesfield, a 52-year-old man from Denton, a 57-year-old man from Failsworth, a 58-year-old man from Rochdale, a 47-year-old man from Rochdale, a 53-year-old man from Manchester, a 19-year-old from Medlar-with-Wesham, Lancashire were brought in. A 28-year-old from Prestwich, on the other hand, was arrested on suspicion of alleged common assault.

    19-year-old Kian Hold, from Medlar-with-Wesham, was arrested on charges of tragedy chanting with a public order offence under the Section 3 Football Offence Act 1991. The teenager is due to appear before the Sefton Magistrates Court on January 8. Six out of the nine arrested are already out on bail while two are discharged for voluntary attendance.

    Earlier this summer, all 20 Premier League clubs came together to crack down on tragedy chanting at stadiums and agreed on criminal proceedings against such offenders. Similar chants were heard at Old Trafford last season during Manchester United's 4-3 win over the Reds in the FA Cup.

    The convincing 2-0 win over City helped Liverpool take a resounding nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after 13 matches. They will be next seen in action on Wednesday as they face Newcastle United at St James' Park. City, meanwhile, host Nottingham Forest.
